Diego Simeone has signed a contract extension with Atlético keeping him in Madrid until 2020. 44 years old manager is widely considered as one of the top managers in European football and was in high demand with recent success with the limited budget Atléti, but he has decided to remain faithful to the club.
Since taking over Atlético in 2011, he won La Liga title, Copa del Rey, European Super Cup, Europa League and enjoyed a thrilling Champions League final v Real Madrid last year. Atléti were seconds away from winning the Champions League when Sergio Ramos took the match into extra-time where Real eventually won. It’s absolutely no doubt that the owners did everything to keep him at Atlético.
Among others, the Argentine was considered a candidate to replace Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City manager, after the Citizens recent poor form in the league as well as in the Champions League where they were knocked out by Barcelona in the round of 16 once again.
However, City have denied interest and any alleged offer for the service of Simeone, after the news of his decision to stay at his current club together with his full coaching personnel.
After signing the deal, Simeone stated :
I am here because I'm convinced the club will continue to grow. We can look forward to a new stadium, and there is a great deal of excitement. The club keeps growing. I've made a decision to stay where I am and decisions are sometimes difficult to make in life. Fortunately I've been able to make this decision as I see a club that is moving forward, I see eagerness to grow and people willing to collaborate. We all love Atlético Madrid, and we all want to grow together.
Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo concluded :
Passion, effort, nobility, work, solidarity, courage, heart … he showed in his years of football, where he gave himself, body and soul, in the defense of Atlético colors. Nobody embodies the values of our club more so than Simeone!
