Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal announced in a press conference that Danny Welbeck was sold to Arsenal because he was not of a high enough standard for his team. He also stated that bad efficiency in comparison to other two strikers Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie was the main reason for the transfer: "He played three seasons for United after his return from Sunderland and he wasn't as good as Rooney or van Persie. We recently signed another striker in Falcao so Danny simply had no space to play here and that is the reason why I had to let him go".
Former Dutch national team coach said that every player had a chance to prove his playing standard at United. Mexican striker Chicharito was released to Real Madrid for the same reason as Danny Welbeck, just before Falcao was signed. Danny Welbeck was sent to 1-year loan to Arsenal in a deal worth 16 million. Welbeck never scored more than 9 goals in one season during his whole career and he was a Manchester United player since he was 9 years old, advancing through all the Manchester United youth teams and making his debut for senior team in 2008. In 2008 he won the FIFA Club World Cup with the club and in 2009 he also won the League Cup with. After that he spent seasons at Preston and Sunderland on loan.

Wayne Rooney - 159 goals in 310 appearances
Danny Welbeck - 20 goals in 90 appearances
