Jonás Gutiérrez is finally ready to make a return to Newcastle United’s first-team on Saturday having recovered from testicular cancer. Newcastle’s St. James Park could see emotional scenes if the Argentine midfielder comes on this weekend.
Newcastle United manager John Carver said :
He came to see me this morning. We had a conversation and both agreed the time is right for him. I told him he needs to be ready to come off the bench. I don’t know why he said what he did but I’ve put the record straight. He obviously thinks the board are making the decisions but it’s me, it’s my decision. And it’s totally a football decision.
Carver has named Gutiérrez in the squad for the home match against Villa, after the already mentioned mutual agreement he is ready to make a comeback after the recovery from testicular cancer.
Carver continued :
When we announce the team at the weekend and our fans hear that Jonás is on the bench, can you imagine the feeling in the stadium? There’s going to be a feel-good factor. But I’m not doing it for that reason. I’m doing it for football reasons.
Jack Colback is suspended and Cheik Tioté is injured, so Gutiérrez’ comeback could be valuable in Newcastle midfield. After overcoming the illness, Gutiérrez’ next challenge is to prove to Newcastle once again, as his contract is to expire this summer. He was also connected to Argentine side Velez, but Gutiérrez’ fitness is certainly in question and he has to produce at top level again.
Carver agreed that Gutiérrez has to fight to prove himself once more :
He’s fighting for his career. It’s an important time for him. He’s got three months left here so at every opportunity he’ll want to prove a point. That determination could also help us.
