Since joining Liverpool in August 2014 for a transfer fee of £16 million, Mario Balotelli has made 13 appearances and scored only one Premier League goal. The goal did come as the winner against Tottenham Hotspur in February, and maybe prolong Rodgers’ and fans’ patience, but how longer will they wait for Super Mario to become super?
Balotelli has not travelled to the away match at Arsenal, which Liverpool lost 4-1, Rodgers saying he ruled himself out after picking up a slight knock during the pre-match training. Although many started discussing why would he miss out for such an important match with a slight knock, Rodgers kept his cool.
Matches Balotelli missed at Liverpool and reasons why
Yesterday, Balotelli missed out on another game, against Blackburn this time in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, for alleged illness. He traveled with the team but woke up feeling unwell, and could not participate in the team's narrow win sending them through to the semi-final. He was criticized for it by pundits and social media alike, former Blackburn player Robbie Savage saying :
Pathetic, isn't it? You're going to miss an FA Cup quarter-final. I don't know how unwell he is, but to miss an FA Cup quarterfinal when you're feeling a bit ill? Nonsense. I would have to be really, really ill to miss that game.
Balotelli probably felt offended by the criticism and took to Twitter showing the thermometer listing high temperature of 38.7C, adding :
Nothing stop me to watch my team winning. At least this time you know the real reason I am out. Miss the pitch so much #unluckyseason #YNWA #illbeback
Is Balotelli's future in danger? Many have criticized him before but Rodgers was desperate looking for a striker, with fragile Sturridge and inconsistent Borini. Throughout the season, it has become obviously questionable if £16 million acquisition was really worth it.
